In this series, I am interested in borders that seem distinct but become indefinable when one looks closely. As an example of this I have created images of sky and ground, the basic elements in a landscape, as a reference to what we think of as separate but is actually a dynamic breathing whole.
Likewise, the printing process itself is one of separate entities interacting and merging into an image. I created these prints by dragging a copper plate behind me as I hiked. I fully inked the scratched surface, and pressed the first color into the paper. Then I partially re-inked the plate and ran it through the press upside down, creating the illusion of a horizon line even though the sky color actually runs from the top to the bottom.
For me, this is a reminder that I too am intimately and profoundly interconnected with the environment.

images are 10.5" x 10.5" printed on 22" x 22" Rives BFK paper

Along with a few prints that turn out, I make a vast amount of bad prints: boring, dorky, blurry, wrinkled. I feel like I should apologize to the beautiful paper for what I put it through. Many of these are stuffed deeply into the garbage. In those I keep, I look for anything salvageable, a moment of beauty, interest, or even humor. I use this as a starting point. Then, I try to make the most of these mistakes by cropping and drawing on them.
